The math

How the number is worked out

The calculator takes the calls you miss in a week and keeps only the callers who go to someone else. Of those, it keeps the share that would have become a paying job for you. Then it multiplies by what an average job is worth. A month is a year divided by 12, and a year is 52 weeks.

It counts each lost caller once, as one job. It doesn't count repeat work, reviews or referrals that a happy customer would have brought later, so for most shops the real loss is bigger.

The only number we fill in for you is how many callers move on. It comes from a 2025 CallRail survey of 1,000 U.S. consumers: 82% said they'll call a competitor if a business doesn't answer, 21% said they immediately call another business, and only 42% said they leave a voicemail. That's what people say they do, not a count of your callers, so change it to fit your customers.

Why calls get missed

You can't answer from under a sink

Most missed calls aren't carelessness. You're on a roof, driving, talking to a customer, or it's after hours and you're with your family. The phone rings, it goes to voicemail, and most callers don't leave a message. They try the next name on the list.

  • Emergency calls, like a burst pipe or no heat, go to whoever picks up first.
  • A caller who hears voicemail often doesn't wait for a call back.
  • Calling back an hour later usually reaches someone who already booked.

If you run Google's local ads, missed calls can cost you twice

Since October 1, 2026, Google Local Services Ads can charge you a lead fee for a call you miss during business hours if the caller waits more than 20 seconds. So you may pay for the call and still lose the job. This calculator doesn't add that fee. Read what Google changed, in plain words →

Questions

Questions about the calculator

How does the calculator work?

It multiplies four numbers: the calls you miss in a week, how many of those callers go to someone else, how many callers usually turn into a paying job, and what an average job is worth. Then it shows that for a week, a month and a year. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.

Where does the 82% come from?

From a CallRail survey of 1,000 U.S. consumers published in September 2025: 82% said they'll call a competitor if a business doesn't answer, and only 42% said they leave a voicemail. It's what people say, not a count of your callers, so change it if your customers are more patient.

I don't know how many calls I miss.

Most phones show it. Open your recent calls and count the missed ones from numbers you don't know for the last week. Calls that came in while you were on a job or after hours count too.

What should I put for “how many become a job”?

Your own number. Think of ten new callers: how many usually end up booking work? If it's about half, leave it at 50%.

Does Google charge me for missed calls too?

If you run Google Local Services Ads, it can. Since October 1, 2026, a call you miss during business hours can be charged as a lead if the caller waits more than 20 seconds. That cost is on top of the lost job, and this calculator doesn't include it.
