What is an after-hours answering service?

An after-hours answering service picks up your business line when you're closed: late at night, on a weekend or on a holiday. It gets the caller's name, number, problem and address to you. Ringbrook does it with an AI receptionist named Brook. She texts you each call the moment it ends, and every call is recorded.

Step by step

What happens to a call at 2 AM

Nothing changes for the caller.

  • The caller dials your number, the same one on your truck.
  • You don't pick up, or you've forwarded your phone for the night. The call rolls to Ringbrook instead of voicemail.
  • Brook answers in your business name. No menu, no "press 1."
  • She asks your trade's questions one at a time. She always gets the name, callback number and address.
  • If it's an emergency, she gets the callback number first and gives the safety line that fits.
  • Seconds after the caller hangs up, your phone buzzes with the text. Every call is recorded and written out on your dashboard.
Example calls

Three after-hours calls, and the text you get

Plumbing · 2:10 AM, Tuesday

Caller: “Water's coming through the kitchen ceiling. I think a pipe burst upstairs.”

Brook: Flags an emergency and gets the callback number first. If they can safely reach it, she tells them to turn off the main water.

Towing · 1:25 AM, Friday

Caller: “My truck died on the shoulder. I need a tow.”

Brook: Asks where they are and whether it's safe to stay in the vehicle. Nobody's hurt, so she gets the location and a callback number. She doesn't send a truck or give an arrival time.

Pest control · 8:15 PM, Friday

Caller: “We're due for our quarterly service. Can someone come out next week?”

Brook: Routine. You've connected Google Calendar, so she offers your open times and books the one the caller picks.

Emergencies

How Brook tells an emergency from a routine call

Brook treats damage or danger happening right now as an emergency. She gets the callback number first, and your text starts with EMERGENCY CALL. When she can't tell, she asks one question: "Is that happening right now?"

  • Plumbing: water she can't stop, flooding or sewage coming into the house is an emergency. A drip or a slow drain is routine.
  • Towing: if anyone is hurt or in danger, she tells them to call 911 right away. Then she takes the location and the details for you.
  • Pest control: most calls are routine. If someone is hurt, like a sting with a bad reaction, she tells them to call 911 right away.

Safety first, and no promises she can't keep

If they can safely reach it, Brook tells callers to turn off the main water. For a gas smell, she tells them to leave the building and call the gas company or 911 from outside. She never tells anyone to touch a gas line.

Brook is not a dispatcher. She doesn't send a truck or give an arrival time. Emergencies are never booked. She gets the call to you, flagged, and you decide who goes.

Nights, weekends and holidays

A 24/7 answering service for small business

Brook answers every hour of every day, including nights, weekends and holidays. A night answering service only helps if the message reaches you. Your text arrives the moment each call ends. She answers every call, even several at once.

  • Robocalls get a polite no. No text to you, and they use none of your minutes.
  • A caller who speaks Spanish is answered in Spanish. Your text still comes in English.
  • Change her rules any time, like "Booked till Thursday." It's live on the next call.
Your options

Four ways to handle calls after hours

Want a person on every call? A staffed service fits. Want every call answered and the details in a text? That's Brook.

  • Voicemail. Plenty of callers who reach a voicemail hang up and call the next name on the list.
  • Answering it yourself. Every call wakes you up, even the ones that could wait until morning.
  • A staffed answering service. People in a call center take a message and pass it on.
  • An AI receptionist. Brook is an AI, and we say so. She asks your trade's questions and texts you in seconds.
Forwarding

Keep your number. Set it up tonight.

Sign up and type what you do. Brook writes her questions for your trade. Your Ringbrook number comes with your plan. Then dial one short code from your cell. We give you the exact one for your carrier. It works with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. Nothing to install.

  • Only the calls you miss: your phone rings first. The calls you don't pick up go to Brook.
  • Everything, for as long as you want: an hour, a night, a weekend, or always.
  • Back to normal: one code turns it off.
Cost

What after-hours answering costs

Every plan answers 24 hours a day, nights and weekends included. Plans start at $99 a month for 250 minutes. Only the time Brook is on the phone with a caller counts. A typical trade call runs about two minutes.

A person sitting by the phone gets paid for every hour, busy or not. The median receptionist wage was $18.27 an hour in May 2025, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Twelve hours of night coverage at that rate is about $219 for one night, before payroll taxes. Ringbrook starts at $99 for the month.
